Gas line repair in Thornton and the Denver Metro
If you smell gas, leave the home now and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. For everything else, like a leaking gas valve or fitting, a damaged gas line, or a line that needs to be extended or upsized for a new water heater or tankless unit, call us.
Gas piping carries natural gas from the meter to your water heater, furnace, range, dryer and other gas appliances. In Colorado, that piping falls under plumbing licensing, so it's work for a licensed plumber.
If you smell gas
- Leave the home right away, and get everyone out.
- Don't turn lights or appliances on or off, use a phone, or light anything inside.
- From outside and well away from the home, call 911 or your gas utility.
- Once the utility has made it safe, call us for the repair.
Gas work we do
- Leaking gas shutoff valves and fittings
- Damaged, corroded or kinked gas pipe
- Replacing old flexible connectors to water heaters and other appliances
- Extending or upsizing a gas line for a new water heater or tankless unit
- Gas lines when switching a water heater from electric to gas
Not sure if your job fits? Call and describe it. If it's not something we do, we'll say so.
Why tankless often needs a bigger line
A tankless unit draws a lot of gas when it fires. A line that was sized for a tank may not be big enough, and an undersized line can keep the unit from reaching full output. We check the line size when we plan a tankless install.
When to call about a gas line
- A gas valve or fitting that tests positive for a leak
- Pipe that's rusted, damaged or was hit during other work
- A new appliance that needs a gas line
- A tankless install that needs a larger line
- A utility or inspector told you to have a line repaired
How a visit goes
- Safety firstIf there's any smell of gas, the utility comes first. We work on lines once it's safe.
- Find the problemWe check the valves, fittings and pipe to find the leak or the part that needs work.
- Agree on the repairA clear explanation and a price before we start.
- Repair and testWe make the repair, test the line for leaks, and relight appliances before we leave.
What's different here
- Licensing. In Colorado, gas piping in homes is covered by plumbing licensing through the State Plumbing Board (DORA).
- Permits. Many cities require a permit and inspection for gas piping work. We'll tell you when one is needed.
- Digging. If a job means digging in the yard, Colorado 811 must be contacted first so buried lines are marked.
- Altitude. Gas burns with less oxygen at Front Range elevations, which matters when gas appliances are set up.
What affects the cost
Every home is set up differently, so we price the job after we've seen it. These are the things that move the number.
- Where the line isExposed pipe in a basement is faster to reach than pipe inside a finished wall or ceiling.
- How much pipeOne fitting vs. a new run to an appliance.
- Line sizeUpsizing for a tankless unit means more new pipe.
- Permits and inspectionSome cities require them for gas work.
- AccessCrawl spaces, attics and tight spots take more time.
